What a great three days, a good turn out, great weather that cooperated for the most part, and a team running the match that made it a joy to shoot. Dick Whiting drove 900 miles down to Port Malabar to call the match and he along with the team of line and pit officers kept the pace of the match lively and on task to finish on time or early each of the three days.
The weather was mostly overcast with winds from calm to gusts of 20 miles per hour punctuated with a few rainstorms. Conditions were challenging at times but manageable, adding just enough challenge to keep things interesting over the three days of shooting.
The Governors Match was held Friday December 9th, a fast paced match of only thirty shots in Presidents Match format. Five Service Rifle and five match rifle shooters came out on top to be named to the Governors Ten.

The State Championship match was scheduled as an 80 shot match but reduced to 50 due to a pending storm. We were very concerned with making that call at the beginning of the match, but it turned out to be the right decision as the storm held off until we finished the 600 yard prone stage and then hit with a torrential down pour during the awards ceremony and lasted the entire evening. Johnathan Faustino won the match rifle champion with a 487-17X and Bill Walter won the service rifle champion with a 485-14X.

The EIC match was a smooth operation and concluded at 1:30 in spite of a rain delay of 45 minutes or so during the 600 yard prone stage. The covered 600 yard firing point was a blessing, a dry place to avoid the rain and to keep the equipment dry during that brief but heavy rain storm. Pending CMP approval, Dan Dorosheff won the gold, Brian McElhaney won silver, and Sam Yarosh won bronze. Dan had the misfortune of forgetting to put his 600 yard dope on for his first shot at 600 which cost him potential entry to the 495 club as he finished with 485-18X with a miss. Yes, you read that right, a high master score with a miss. How many of us can do that?
Again, pending CMP approval, the leg points are 8 to Bob Stokes and 6 to Randy Hatheway. A nice leather range bag donated by Brownell's goes to Paul Angelo who came in first leather.

We thank our sponsors, Mountaineer Brass Processing, Compass Lake Engineering, White Oak Armament, Sierra Bullets, Berger Bullets, and Brownells/Sinclair, for their generous donations. These are the companies that support our sport, so give them your business when building that new rifle, or stocking up.
And we thank the Port Malabar Rifle & Pistol Club for hosting the matches, Eric Kennard and especially Sam Yarosh for getting the range and pits ready.
And big thanks to Dick Whiting. The matches ran smoother than a Swiss watch.
Our thoughts are already moving on to the Orange Blossom Regional match to be held in March. But planning for the 2012 State Championship matches is underway. We got very few complaints, we learned a lot, and we are determined the matches will be bigger and better in 2012.
